* ABSTRACT:
• “COSMOL™ 222” is a high polar di-ester which consists of Isostearyl Alcohol and Malic Acid, and has hydroxyl group in the molecule as well as Castor Oil.
• Nisshin OilliO determined oxidative stability and physical properties of “COSMOL™222” in comparison with Castor Oil.
• Nisshin OilliO found that “COSMOL™ 222” was superior to Castor Oil in OxidativeStability and physical properties (Compatibility, Water Resistance and Pigment Dispersing Ability), significantly in Compatibility with Hydrocarbon Oils and Silicone Oils.
• In addition, Nisshin OilliO found that “COSMOL™ 222” had ability to control Hardness and Sweating in solid cosmetics.

* INTRODUCTION:
• Castor Oil is high viscosity oil provided from a seed of a castor-oil plant. More than 80% fatty acid composing Castor Oil is the Ricinoleic acid that has a hydroxyl group. It is known that Castor Oil has different properties from other vegetable oil. Castor Oil is
mainly used in lubricants, paints and cosmetics, and widely used in make-up cosmetics because of its high adhesiveness and good pigment dispersing ability.

• On the other hand, “COSMOL™ 222” has been widely used as a substitute for Castor Oil in the world cosmetics industry for a long time because Castor Oil is not good in oxidative stability and compatibility with hydrocarbon oils and silicone oils.
• This document shows that Diisostearyl Malate, “COSMOL™ 222” has superior properties to Castor Oil and introduces the technical data to use “COSMOL™ 222” widely in cosmetic formulation.

* RUSULTS AND DISCUSSIONS:
1. Oxidative Stability:

1.1 POV (Peroxide Value)
• COSMOL™ 222 exhibited higher oxidative stability than Castor Oil, with only a slight increase in peroxide value after 168 hours of testing.

1.2 CDM† (Conductometric Determination Method)
1.2.1 Oxidative Stability of Pigment Base
• COSMOL™ 222 showed higher oxidative stability in pigment bases, with a lower increase in conductivity compared to Castor Oil according to the CDM method.

1.2.2 Oxidative Stability of Lipstick
• Lipsticks formulated with COSMOL™ 222 exhibited higher oxidative stability, with a lower increase in conductivity compared to those formulated with Castor Oil (CDM test).

1.2.3 Oxidative Stability of Powder Foundation
• Powder foundations formulated with COSMOL™ 222 exhibited higher oxidative stability compared to those formulated with Castor Oil (CDM test).

1.3 Heating Test
• COSMOL™ 222 exhibited superior thermal stability compared to Castor Oil, with no significant changes in color or odor after the heating test.

2. Viscosity:
• COSMOL™ 222 có độ nhớt cao hơn Castor Oil ở nhiệt độ thường, trong khi ở nhiệt độ cao hai loại dầu thể hiện độ nhớt tương đương.

3. Interfacial Property

4. CONCLUSION:
=> COSMOL™ 222 excels in oxidative stability. COSMOL™ 222 is not only a substitute for Castor Oil but also the oil which is superior to Castor Oil in compatibility and pigment dispersing ability. Especially with high compatibility, COSMOL™ 222 can be used for a various formulations containing hydrocarbon oils and/or silicone oils.
In addition, COSMOL™ 222 can be widely used for the solid cosmetics because it has abilities to harden waxes and to prevent from sweating.

* APPLICATION: Lipstick, Lip Gloss, Color Lip Gloss , Lip Balm, Powder Foundation, Oil-Based Foundation, Translucent Lipstick
